ARTHUR SMITH AWARD Sponsored by the United Kingdom Delegation
Conferred upon an individual who, over numerous years, has given dedicated service to the objectives of IIW, particularly in the work of the Commissions.
Dr Patrick W. Hochanadel (USA) of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) received BS, MS and PhD degrees in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines under the guidance of Prof. Glen Edwards. He began working at LANL in 1997 as a Staff Scientist. His research interests include electron beam welding, laser beam welding, and additive manufacturing. Hochanadel has co-authored numerous publications and contributed to the AWS Welding Handbook and ASM Metals Handbook, Volume 6A, in both electron beam welding and laser beam welding. He has served in various leadership roles for the AWS Committee on High Energy Beam Welding and on the Technical Papers Committee for nearly 20 years. Hochanadel is a member of the Editorial Board as an Associate Editor for the IIW Journal Welding in the World and has served as US Delegate to Commission IV Power Beam Processes for several years.
IIW REGIONAL ACTIVITIES AWARD Sponsored by the IIW
Conferred on an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution to improving the global quality of life through optimum use and innovation of welding and joining technologies in their region or internationally.
Dr-Ing. Vencislav Grabulov (Serbia) has been a driving force for the promotion of wel- ding technology and, through this, the improvement of quality of life in Serbia and the South-East European Region. His work created bonding and much stronger regional coo- peration between the welding societies of the ex-Yugoslavia states. He was the President of the Serbian Welding Society (1998-2010), Chief Executive of the Serbian Authorised Nominated Body (ANB) from its foundation and has represented Serbia in various capacities in IIW activities since 1981 (Commissions IX, X, XIV, IAB members, IAB Working Groups A & B, WG-RA). Grabulov, who teaches welding engineering at the University of Belgrade, is author of more than 200 conference papers and publications in leading journals. From 2003, toge- ther with colleagues from regional countries, he has been intimately involved in orga- nising three successful IIW International Congresses and many regional workshops and conferences, and the establishment and growth of the very successful South-East Euro- pean Network (SEENET) for welding technology transfer.
